Venue Information

Capacity: 1598

The Robert Blackwood Hall is one of Melbourne’s largest and most prestigious concert venues beyond the CBD. Named after Monash University’s founding Chancellor, Sir Robert Blackwood, the building was designed by Sir Roy Grounds and has been home to graduation ceremonies for many years.

The hall has a well-deserved reputation for high-quality acoustic performance and is ideally suited to classical and choral concerts. It houses the resplendent Sir Louis Matheson pipe organ and two Steinway Model D Grand pianos. Equipped with a stellar PA and versatile stage lighting, it is equally suitable for contemporary music performances, speech night celebrations and other formal functions. Robert Blackwood Hall has hosted commercial recordings for the ABC, Melbourne Symphony Orchestra and various film scores.

The climate-controlled Concert Hall has fixed seating for up to 1598. The raked stalls area holds up to 1256 seats and is completely accessible via ramps. There are a further 342 seats in the balcony.

The foyers house larger-than-life artworks by distinguished Australian artists, such as Arthur Boyd, and the dazzling Lindesay Clark stained glass window designed by Leonard French – famous for designing the ceiling of the NGV’s Great Hall.
